What are ozonized oils?
Ozonized oils are formed by mixing ozone (O3) with vegetable base oils, thus giving rise to a complex mixture with recognised therapeutic action. Amongst various vegetable oils, olive oil and sunflower oil have been the most widely studied.
These oils have a high capacity to stabilise ozone while maintaining their therapeutic potential.
The preparation of ozonized oils with these two base ingredients is undoubtedly ideal for topical use of ozone for skin maintenance and regeneration.
The compounds present in the ozonised combination of olive oil and sunflower oil yield antioxidant activity and stimulate healthy processes in the human body, together with strong bactericidal, antiviral and antifungal activity, respecting the organic balance.
Quality of ozonized oils
Several vegetable oils can be used for ozonisation and all of them have unique properties. However, after good and correct ozonisation, all of them should present physicochemical alterations in terms of colour reduction, odour alteration, density and increased Peroxide Value (PV).
When properly ozonized, oils lose their colour and become denser, as more ozone is added. A good ozonized oil needs a specific process that is carefully and rigorously executed, which will turn it into a transparent and viscous liquid with a characteristic and pungent smell.
The quality of our ozonized oils is ensured by several parameters: such as the quality of the base ingredients, the use of high precision industrial equipment and constant monitoring during production.
Peroxide Value (PV)

Peroxide Value (PV) measures the amount of active oxygen present per kg of product. Measuring this value is also critical to determine the quality and establish the therapeutic effect of each ozonized oil.
Hence, the evaluation process of the peroxide value should reliably follow the method recommended by the International Scientific Committee on Ozone Therapy (ISCO3), as per the Madrid Declaration on Ozone Therapy (2nd and 3rd Editions).
From a therapeutic point of view, the specifications about ozonized oils are defined on three levels:
High (1200 PV)
The higher the peroxide value in the product, the greater its antimicrobial capacity, because of the greater release of peroxides – antiseptic action.
Medium (600 PV)
Intermediate peroxide values simultaneously perform antiseptic action and promote cell cycle – enabling tissue proliferation in a hyperoxygenated environment.
Low (400 PV)
The lower the peroxide value, the greater its regenerative capacity, because it has a greater healing activity, with enhanced action to induce the synthesis of growth factors and accelerate the cell cycle.
In other words, in inflammatory phases, it is advisable to use an ozonized oil with a high PV. In regeneration phases, an oil with a medium PV should be used, and in healing phases, an oil with a low PV.
Ozonized oils are an interesting choice in the gynaecological field, especially in the treatment of some venereal diseases (VD), or when caused by hormonal changes that affect the vaginal mucosa. The application of ozonized oils for this purpose offers several advantages because these oils are cheaper than other products for the treatment of the same diseases, in addition to the level of effectiveness shown and the very few contraindications and/or side effects.
Interestingly, another field of applicability of ozonized oils is dental medicine. Initially, given the antimicrobial and healing properties of ozone, the use of ozonized oils was only proposed as a disinfectant and healing aid. However, ozonized oils already have many other applications in this field. They are used, for instance, in the treatment of dental infections associated with periodontal disease, for plaque control, in the treatment of gingivitis, aphthous ulcers, oral herpes, oral thrush, angular cheilitis (mouth ulcers) and, they are potentially useful in patients with oral lichen planus (reducing the sensation of burning).
Furthermore, ozonized oils are also recommended after tooth extraction (because they allow for faster healing), for the treatment of receding gums, dental treatment, remineralisation of the tooth surface, tooth whitening, sensitive teeth and the prevention of cavities. Their preparation as a gel (like a toothpaste) also prevents tooth enamel demineralization when patients have to wear orthodontic prosthetics (such as braces).
The use of ozonized oils has also shown very positive results in veterinary medicine, mainly in the treatment of mastitis, skin diseases, otitis, trauma, bites and in the treatment of wounds (thus leading to a faster healing process).
Regarding the use of ozonized oils in dermatology, they can indeed be very effective in infectious and allergic processes of the skin, as they relieve itching. Moreover, they protect the skin barrier, by restoring and moisturising it. After their application on wounds, healing seems to be more rapid.
Ozonized oils are also recommended in cases of atopic dermatitis. This includes, to a severe degree, erythema and psoriasis.
In podiatry, ozonized oils are mainly used to treat diabetic foot conditions, palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia, onychomycosis, onychogryphosis, onychocryptosis (ingrown toenail), warts, hyperhidrosis, hyperkeratosis and athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), as they act on tissue remodelling as well as healing and eliminating pathogens.
